Why are Presentation Skills so important?
The short answer is by giving a presentation you stand out. Everyone
remembers the person who gave the presentation, they probably won't remember
you if you were just another member in the audience. So whether you are self
employed or work for a large corporate it pays to give presentations when
ever you have the opportunity. Managers, future customers, business partners
all have more respect for an individual who can give a good lively effective
business presentation. They are more likely to remember your name and more
likely to think of you when an opportunity comes up in the future.
Secondly, personal presentations are a very cost effective way to influence
a large number of people all at the same time. Think how much longer it
would take to have individual conversations with each member of your
audience. Presentations provide enormous economies of scale in communicating
your message.
Finally, the personal element of a presentation provides an extra dimension
to your communication which is rarely present in an email, a letter or a
website. What those written forms of communication tend to miss is the
emotional aspect of your communication. With a presentation you can convey
your enthusiasm, your passion, your excitement as part of the message. Given
well that enthusiasm becomes contagious influencing your audience far more
than any email is likely to do.
That is why being good at giving a presentation is so important especially
in today's web enabled, technology driven world.
How can you learn how to give a good presentation?
The obvious answer is to come on one of my Effective Business Presentation
Training courses. You could read books, and blogs about presentation skills
you could try an online e-learning course but in my humble opinion the best
way is to come on a course where you can learn the right approach and get
personal feedback on your own presentations. There is nothing difficult in
giving a business presentation, the vast majority of it is common sense when
you think about it, the biggest problem is that most people don't give it
enough thought.
If you are nervous about standing up to speak in public, that is quite
understandable and nothing to be ashamed of. On my course we discuss why
people are nervous and I'll provide you with some techniques which
will reduce that nervous anxiety. One of the biggest factors is being
confident that your presentation will be well received. Knowing the best
structures to use helps raise your confidence in your own ability and makes
giving a presentation far less nerve wracking.
There are three elements to a presentation, the visual element (i.e. what
the audience see on your slides and in your body language), the verbal
element (i.e. the words that you use, your style of language and the
structure of your talk) and the vocal element, (i.e. your tone of voice,
speed of delivery and the emotional content of your voice). My one day
presentation courses addresses all 3 of these aspects.
Why choose a one day presentation training course?
Many training companies offer a one day beginners presentation course and a
two day advanced presentations course, I only run a one day Effective
Business Presentation course which is designed to suit both novice
presenters and the more experienced. In my experience one day is long enough
to cover the main points about public speaking, after all it's not rocket
science, so my one day course costs less and means you need to take less
time out of the office. I focus on the aspects of public speaking and
business presentations which matter, the aspects that will make a difference
to your presentations. My courses are very interactive and start with
participants telling me what they want to learn. That way each course can be
moulded to the needs of the participants.
I can't promise that in one day I'll turn you into the ultimate raconteur
but by the end of the day you will be more confident and you will know
how to set about giving a presentation. The rest, as they say, is practise.
The more presentations you give the better you will become, and I'll be
around to help and support you through my on-going presentation support
service, which is all part of my service, aimed at ensuring you gain the
most from my training.

Why come on a demonstration workshop?
There are very few courses available which cover how to give an effective
technology demonstration. My demonstration workshop does just that. It is
aimed at pre-sales consultants or support engineers, i.e. the technically
minded people who demonstrate your products and solutions to prospective
customers.
In my experience pre-sales people usually learn how to give a
demonstration by watching their predecessors giving demos. They then add
their own bits and make things up as they go along,. Once someone has
been with the company for a few months they rarely have the opportunity to
see anyone else demonstrate the products so they carry on doing it how they
do it.
This results in widely differing demonstrations of the same product
by different people in the same company. The second problem with giving
demos is that the people who give them tend to be technically minded, not
sales oriented. This is inevitable to a great extent, but it does mean that
unlike many of their prospective customers they have an innate interest in
the technology.
My demonstration workshop starts with the basic question "Why give a demo?"
which focuses the participants minds on why they are doing the demo and what
the objective of their demo should be. We then cover the basics of a
solution selling approach before looking at the anatomy of an ideal
demonstration. In the afternoon we focus on practicals, where people can
run through their demonstrations and get honest feedback for their
colleagues and peers on how effective it has been and suggestions for any
areas of improvement that may be highlighted.
As with my presentation skills training, the effective demonstration workshop
is very interactive as I believe people learn best by doing rather than
sitting listening.
